People Are Your Only Active Asset!
Every other asset you have within your business is passive -- from equipment, to materials, to finished products. If you don't have a person programming or running the equipment, ordering, stocking, or using the materials, or engaging with the customer to sell the finished product, all those other assets do is sit there. So what kind of return are you getting from your most valuable asset -- your people?
Solve Persistent Problems
People managers spend, on average, 60%-70% of their time managing employee problems and performance issues. Many times, this time is spent reviewing, reworking, or re-fixing the same problem or issue. Rather than spend time focusing on continual problems, look at the system that allows those problems to exist -- people and performance problems are the symptoms of strategy and structural issues.
Make Talent Work
Employees make the greatest contribution and impact when they can engage their strongest personal traits in their work. Managers who recognize those traits, inspire employees to become fully engaged, and better coordinate the interactions of their team create the most effective outcomes and achieve the greatest results.
Focus on What's Critical
Leaders often are required to make changes to organizational design to create more effective and productive processes and teams. Involving staff in pertinent changes, gaining their agreement and support for those changes, and holding them accountable for the results allows team members to put their passion into their work and achieve a higher level of excellence.
